Farmers markets are important part of the community for economic, social and environmental vitality

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Farmers markets serve not only as a way for people to purchase locally grown produce but also as a chance for them to connect with others within their communities. Purchasing local goods is an experience that promotes a sense of place, important in making individuals feel tied to their communities.

Managing markets properly will achieve the perfect social setting for people to meet and greet while they purchase their goods. Considering how their market welcomes people is crucial for managers in providing a warm atmosphere and promoting togetherness within the community.

Julia Darnton, Michigan State University Extension educator, said “Markets are anchored in community, connect people with each other and valued commodities, and creates opportunities for business.”

Consumers are demanding more local produce partly because they enjoy putting a face to the farmer who grew it. Farmers markets are becoming an important part of the food industry, and the environmental benefits that go along with it – reduced transportation costs and reduced vehicle emissions – are creating a driving force for the increasing popularity of these markets.

Farmers markets have the potential to shift the local economy of their community by encouraging consumers to change their diets and eat seasonally. This would allow more money to circulate within the region and spill over to other local businesses. Farmers markets are also less likely to relocate than large grocery stores and they provide stability for local economies.
