4-H teens from across the state will participate in the 26th annual Capitol Experience. This four-day conference focuses on civic engagement and public policy.  The teens, along with adult volunteers, learn how they can become politically engaged and influence policy issues while interacting with legislators, state agency staff members and lobbyists.

The opening event for Capitol Experience is at 4 p.m. Sunday (March 9) in the Beaumont Room of the Lansing Quality Inn, featuring guest speakers Reps. Barbara Byrum and Paul Opsommer.  On Tuesday (March 11), a legislative breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. at Paul’s Episcopal Church.  4-H’ers have breakfast with legislators to discuss issues such as agriculture, crime and drugs, education, the environment and natural resources, and health and personal safety.

Michigan 4-H, the state’s largest youth development program, is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2008. Michigan 4-H involves more than 250,000 young people and 25,000 adult volunteers and operates through a partnership among county governments, Michigan State University Extension and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In addition to citizenship activities, 4-H youth are involved in programs on environmental education, healthy lifestyles, personal development, and science and technology.
